One person injured in Rochester bus crash that injured 28 has died, deputies say

Chili, N.Y. — One person of the 28 injured in a Rochester bus crash has died, deputies said.
Twenty-eight people were injured in the crash as the bus was headed westbound on Interstate 490 around 7:10 a.m., according to Todd Baxter, the Monroe County sheriff. The bus left the road, swerved back onto the road and eventually flipped on its side and slid about 200 yards, Chief Deputy Michael Fowler said.
One person was brought out of through a roof hatch and transported to a hospital in critical condition, said Dr. Michael Kamali with the University of Rochester Medical Center.
They were pronounced dead at Strong Memorial Hospital Thursday night, said Deputy Brendan Hurley, on Friday afternoon.
The bus had left New York City around midnight and was making drop-offs at various cities along the Thruway, including Rochester just before the crash, Fowler said. The final destination was intended to be Niagara Falls.
The driver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was ejected through the front windshield, Fowler said. The driver had significant injuries but was still able to help passengers after the crash, he said.
The driver was ticketed for fatigued driving, speeding more than 70 mph, unsafe lane changes and not wearing a seatbelt, he said.
Deputies, State Police and the department of transportation are doing a mechanical inspection of the bus and investigating the driver’s logs and the amount of rest the driver was given, Fowler said. They are also reviewing all videos on the bus and from nearby dashcams, he said.
Deputies ask family members and loved ones trying to get in contact with relatives who might’ve been a passenger on the bus to call 585-753-4455.
